“Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle”
Scoma’s philosophy to minimize its impact on the environment has earned the San Francisco Commercial Recycler of the Year (CORY) award for large restaurants four consecutive years, and an annual WRAP award from the California Integrated Waste Management Board since 2004.

Scoma’s sources most of its fish from North American waters and works diligently to find sustainable fisheries. Environmentally friendly packaging is also part of their mission.

Today, as in the past, Fisherman’s Wharf is the heart of San Francisco’s fishing industry. And Scoma’s Restaurant is one of its much-loved landmarks.

But it had humble beginnings. In 1965 Al and his brother Joe Scoma heard about a small coffee shop on the Wharf that was for sale. In the tiny, six-stool coffee shop on Pier 47 the Scomas served local fishermen breakfast and burgers and began the long and ultimately successful process of turning the hidden local hang-out into one of San Franciscans’ favorite restaurants.

Using their mother’s recipe collection brought from her native Sicily, the Scoma brothers’ humble café became so popular that it is now a 350-seat restaurant that attracts locals as well as visitors from all over the world. . In mid-2005, San Francisco residents turned out to celebrate Scoma’s 40th anniversary.

Scoma’s owns its own fish receiving station, ensuring that it serves only the freshest seafood. Guests can watch wild salmon and local Dungeness crab being offloaded from boats and prepared for the kitchen

Over the years, so many diners expressed a desire to “take some of Scoma’s home,” that the family launched a line of seafood entrees, beginning with their famous crab, salmon and shrimp cakes. Conveniently packaged with a packet of Scoma’s proprietary sauce base (to mix with mayonnaise), they are a genuine taste of Fisherman’s Wharf and San Francisco.

Always a family man, Al enlisted many members of his family to build the business, and it is now in the able hands of his son-in-law Tom Creedon. Tom has continued the Scoma’s tradition of contributing to the community, especially the Bay Area police and fire departments - particularly its fireboats - as well as the Salesian Boys' & Girls' Club in North Beach, Al Scoma’s favorite charity.
